Thrifting Fast Update

So how's it going? Have you all been shopping?

I haev a very exciting announcement about my shopping fast! I got ALL my old unlisted inventory listed last week! So I got to go shopping!  I found a lot of fun new goodies, which I got listed within 4 days. And you know what? 3 of them sold overnight!

Let me tell you - it is an AMAZING feeling to bring a bag of goodies into the house and list them and send them right back out again. It also feels pretty great to be out shopping guilt-free. I didn't have any thoughts in the back of my mind about the mountains and mountains of stuff I already have at home that I should list, so why am I buying more. It was just fun!

So I'd like to challenge you (and myself!) for 2012 ... get all your new purchases listed within one week of bringing them into the house. I am going to aim for 48 hours, but life does happen around here, so I'll officially give myself a full week. It's great not having bins of stuff all over the living room. I'm excited to see if I can keep that up. We can do this!!

Because of my shopping fast, this will be my last FFF post for the year. And it's not even a very exciting one. :)   I shopped a couple times and didn't find anything super-exciting, but I finally found my first Reyn Spooner shirt. I've heard a lot about them, and that they are good sellers, but I've never really ventured into men's clothing before, so I've never actively looked for them. I actually had time to kill one afternoon this week, so I plunked the toddlers into the cart with a toy and browsed the entire men's shirt rack. I found a couple cool Authentic Western cowboy shirts, a men's 2XL Charlie Brown Christmas shirt (which already sold), and this Reyn Spooner shirt. It looks like it was sewn with the fabric wrong side out, but all the seams are on the inside like they're supposed to be, so I guess it was on purpose. Kind of different-looking anyway. I'm anxious to see how this does for me.

Hi all you fellow eBayers, remember me?...Lesley?  I've been busy in the retail world working my day job...tis' the season you know, but I managed to go shopping yesterday and I'm so glad I did.  Christmas was in full gear at my favorite Goodwill.  In fact they had just remodeled it, dividing it into 2 stores side by side (one for clothing/shoes and the other for housewares).  I had the most fun in housewares.  It's was literally Christmas heaven! 

Here are some of my highlights:

Santa Claus was everywhere and here is what hubby and I walked away with.  There's a vintage salt and pepper set (actually 2 sets), a paper mache Santa from Japan, a Royal Daulton mug, and a vintage ceramic Santa ornament.  These I will use throughout the house as decor all the while they are listed for resale.

I was also in need of garland for an area of my home and found some brand new pre-lit garland for $3.99.  I also picked up wrapping supplies and bows (all new) and some unique ornaments like a Jim Shore new in box set of 2 carolers!

This adorable little Santa Claus night light house is now taking up space in my bathroom.  I won't list it because I decided it was an early gift for myself! 

Okay, but what will we make money on.....??

This wooden Santa stands about 4 feet tall.  Hubby actually found this tucked away in a corner. Okay, I admit I don't really want to sell this either because as you can see it looks so cute tucked in at the stairs.  But, hubby and I agreed to put a huge price tag on it and see what happens.  After less than 24 hours there is currently an offer of $150!  Sorry, but I can't part with him for that price! ;)

And no, I'm am NOT a hoarder!

This Week's Thrift Finds

I went to Goodwill twice this week. Both trips treated me well! On Tuesday, I decided to branch out into toys a little more. Despite having 4 kids, I know nothing about what toys sell well, so I took a risk on these. I suspect I paid too much for them, but I'm hoping for the best.

• V-Tech Big Top Laptop: Paid $2.17. Completeds aren't too terribly exciting, but I should be able to get at least 5-6 times my investment.
• Mattel See 'n' Say Says Whooo: Paid $4.23. Before I bought this, I did a quick search on my phone and there was only one listed (for $49.99 auction, $59.99 BIN). I snatched it up quickly. Once I got it home, a more careful search showed me that most people listed it with the wrong number of O's in "Whooo," and that the $49.99/$59.99 listing is definitely an outlier. Hopefully I can sell it for $20 or so, but I'm not holding my breath.
• Blues Clues Tickety Clock: Paid $2.11. I'm thinking about putting together a Blues Clues toy lot.
• Vision Ware 1 L spouted saucepan with lid: Paid $3.17. Definitely paid too much for such a small pot, and I knew better. I must have been distracted when I bought that.
• Cheer Bear with Microphone: Paid 53c. Doesn't look good. Will probably list for $20 for awhile and see what happens.
• Born Mary janes: Paid $2.99. Will list for $30 and free shipping.

I stopped in again today and again, I wasn't disappointed.

• 3 snow-brick makers: Paid 99c each. These are for my kids. They get brittle and break, so it's nice to have extras.
• 6 Ugly Christmas Sweaters: Paid $3.99 per sweater, $2.99 per vest. I'm hoping these will do well in our EBUG Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest.
• SAS oxfords: Paid $2.99. I always do well with this brand. This pair is a size 9 WW. I'll probably list them for $45 with free shipping.
• Columbia IUP fleece vest: Paid $2.99. This is a local college. I probably should have passed on it but will give it a shot at $20 with free shipping.
• Horse & Sleigh sweater: Paid $3.99. This is for my horse-obsessed daughter.
• New in package mushroom latch hook: Paid $4.17. I was just thinking the other day that I'm running very lot on latch hook kits. I was down to one. A dumb one that will never sell, I'm sure. I'm hoping for $30 on the mushroom one.

I found a big fat nothing this week. Absolutely nothing. This is the first time in a LONG time that I didn't even set foot in a thrift store. I just didn't have the time. But we have a short day of homeschool planned today. You can bet as soon as it's over, we're headed out to run errands, one of which is Goodwill. I hope to find something worth the wait!

I'm in Virginia right now visiting with my family.  I'm here for personal reasons but hope to squeeze out a little shopping for inventory.  As I was driving down on Wednesday I took a little detour to the Goodwill in Dover....what a beautiful area.  I quickly scanned the shoes and found 4 for resale at $4 a piece.  Next I did a quick scan of the toys and found a vintage Fisher Price phonograph circa 1978. Terapeak is showing an average price of $24.18 with a 50% sell through rate.  Six recently sold in the last few months at $50 or more....that's my number!  I paid $5 for it and it's clean.  Total spent $21 with $175 in projected sales.

As I mentioned briefly last week, I had a road trip this past weekend. I have to admit I was a little disappointed. We always hope to find some fantastic treasures on these trips. Besides shoes, literally all I got were some kids' books, a Vision Ware pan, 2 Revere Ware pans, a Baby Gap outfit, and 2 turntables. It was quite a letdown. But. My whole purpose for the road trip was to increase my shoe inventory. I didn't find as many as I usually do. I was a little picky this time. Some of the Harrisburg stores have such high prices. I refuse to pay $8-12 for a pair of Clarks. So I did have to leave behind quite a few pairs, but I still came home with 40 pairs. Of course they're all still in a pile, but I hope to get to them this week. Or at least some of them.

I've been super busy with my day job so my eBay hunting has fallen by the wayside a bit, but I do have a few worthy mentionables to post here.

First is this Crayola Travel Turtle.  It's the perfect little laptop for your traveling tot!  This is currently unavailable on Amazon and I just did a quick search on eBay and nada!  I'm sure someone out there is on the hunt for this hard to find item.

Anytime I see Toy Story anything I get pretty excited and this 16" talking Woody is no exception.  Here's what the completeds look like for used (which mine is).  If your lucky to find a new one you've hit the jackpot! :)

He wasn't priced, which I usually hate, but I thought I remembered reading that this was a good find. So I held it up and asked how much it was. She said, "Oh! That's my daughter's. It's not for sale. Sorry about that!"  ugh. Now granted, I did pick it up off the floor of the garage, but still ... *pout*

I didn't really find anything exciting this week. Just ordinary ho-hum stuff. I was super-excited about this Big Jim Safari Hut that I found at Goodwill for $5.99 until I realized mine was missing Big Jim :(  There's all kinds of extra safari animals in mine though, so hopefully I can turn a decent profit after all.

My Top eBay Moments This Week

This week felt kind of slow at the time, but looking back on it, I see that I had 54 sales this week! That's why we keep track of our sales goals on eBay Underground. It may feel slow at the time, but it adds up faster than we think it does. Out of my 54 sales, 19 were shoes. I only had 1 complaint - I accidentally sent the wrong Thomas train track piece out. My buyer contacted me today and I was able to quickly apologize and ship out the correct piece. Problem averted! I do have 2 unpaid item cases open right now - one for a(nother) Thomas train track piece, and the other for my broken Nintendo & accessories that sold at auction last week. Hrrmph.

Here are my highlights:

This guy was my own personal stuffed lemon from when I was little. I remember opening him up on Christmas Eve. I think I had him overpriced for sentimental reasons, but once I finally dropped my price to something more reasonable, he sold!  Paid $0, sold for $19.99.

I listed this 3 piece toddler's Steelers track suit in February or March, too late for last year's Superbowl. It was a part of the massive kids' clothes investment I made in February. I was holding out hope that it would sell quickly and for good money. I was hoping for $24.99, but I accepted an offer this week for $20.

I've sold these before, but not for very much. I had these listed for $24.99obo, and I received an offer this week for $15 from a buyer in Zambia. I countered with $19.99, and he ended up just making a full price purchase. Not real sure why, but I suspect he thought we were bidding against each other? Paid $2, sold for $24.99.

This is another item I had overpriced for nearly a year. At the time that I bought it, there were no other ones listed, so I listed it for $89.99obo. Not surprisingly, it never had any watchers or offers. I recently dropped it to $39.99obo and accepted an offer this week for $30. I paid $3.17 for it.

My 12 year old nephew asked me a few months ago if I would try to sell this for him. I checked completed listings, but it didn't look good. I told him that they didn't really sell and he said ok. But then I decided I wanted to buy it from him for my kids to play. I told him that and asked him how much he wanted for it. He told me $10, so I gave him the money and brought it home. The kids played with it for a couple weeks, but then it sat on the shelf for two months, untouched. I decided 2 weeks ago to go ahead and list it and see what happened. I listed it for $39.99obo, not expecting much. Imagine my surprise when it actually sold for my full asking price! So I wrote him a note and dropped another $10 in the mail for him. Just goes to show you that completed listings don't tell the whole story.

I found these wild Danskos while I was out shopping with Lesley in July. I paid $4.97 for them. A few days ago, I put all my spring and summer styles on sale, 20% off, so these sold today for $40.00.

I wasn't too sure about these Johnston & Murphy's. They are suede. I keep telling myself I won't buy anymore suede, but it just keeps happening. I listed these for $50 fixed price. I got a message from a buyer today asking me if I'd accept $45 including shipping. I only paid $4.20 for them, and shipping would only be $8, so I was happy to change the price for him. He bought and paid immediately, and they are already on their way to Florida!

These Docs broke my streak. I paid $10 for them in July and sold them this week for $50. But nope - not to Australia, believe it or not!

I also bought these Tod's loafers when I was shopping with Lesley in July. Pretty ugly, aren't they? Who doesn't want a pair of burgundy suede slip on loafers? I bought them because I was thinking they were a brand that Rachel recommended. Once I got home and double-checked, I realized that they weren't the ones that she recommended, but that they were pretty good too! I listed them high to start ($99.99obo), but then dropped them to a fixed price of $60 a couple weeks ago. I paid $4.97 and sold them for $60 yesterday.

I truly enjoyed my vacation last week and am s-l-o-w-l-y getting back to my eBay.  I say slowly because right now I'm preparing for a hurricane heading up my way as well as getting back into school mode for my boys.  I'm excited though because I have a lot of inventory to work on and once my kids are back in school it's so much easier for me to get into my "zone"!

My find this week is a Nativity Playset by Fisher-Price.  Last year I got my hands on a similar one that I sold on Amazon for around $50.

Nativity sets like these are very popular, especially around the holidays (if you can imagine that).  This particular set I have is available on Amazon for $59.99 on up brand new.  There are no used ones listed.  I will list mine on eBay where they are available for $35 on up.  I still have to inspect and take pictures but I plan on doing that today.  Now is the best time to list any seasonal items...my favorites being winter coats, boots and Halloween costumes.

All day yesterday, I thought it was Wednesday. So now I'm all messed up. I didn't get out much this week. I hit Goodwill on Saturday and that's it. There aren't even any good yard sales in the paper today :(  I didn't even find anything fantastic. I got a Notre Dame Cathedral Puzz 3-D for $1.99, but on my first count, I'm short 2 pieces. I'll recount it this weekend. Mine is the one of the actual building (not just the ceiling, and not the one with the explosion on it ... ???) If it's complete, I should be able to get $30-40 for it. Also got a Wilton Batman pan for $2.99, a small Pyrex cinderella bowl for 99c, and 3 pairs of shoes.

I have not gone shopping.  Well let me clarify....I haven't gone thrift shopping.  Instead I've gone GROCERY shopping since I have 4 teenagers in the house this week.  I've gone to the grocery store at least once per day!  Okay, but that's not why you're reading this blog.  I did manage to list some inventory that I've had since the Spring.  I had a lot of new with tag baby clothes in various sizes and colors.  I managed to list them all (over 100 pieces) using the handy multi-variation feature in about 5 listings total.  This made me feel very productive this week!

I'm being such a good girl! I'm dutifully plowing through all my finds from my huge road trip 2 weeks ago. I haven't bought any new inventory in 12 whole days! I haven't even gone to any thrift stores or yard sales either! Gasp! But, I am having a grand time rediscovering the stuff I bought on my road trip. I just opened up one of my bins of shoes and found a great pair of bronze Dansko strappy heels! So I pulled them out and will be listing them this afternoon.

I've been keeping really busy with listing and shipping, so I haven't even missed shopping. Tomorrow is yard sale day though! I knew I couldn't stay away forever :D

Last week was my first thrift shopping trip in well over a month, and it felt pretty good!  Hubby and I found a ton of shoes...the standard Clarks, Born, as well as a few Dansko and Doc Martens.  His biggest find was a pair of Allen Edmonds which he promptly sold for a whopping $225! :)

I'm always hearing about Care Bears, so when I spotted a couple I picked them up.

As well as this smaller one for $1.97 (although she sings!)

This week though should be even more exciting as I have my buddy Jessica rolling into town to do a little shopping with me! ;-)

I finally found my first Risk game! It's been on my list for quite some time, but I've never seen one while I was out thrifting. It's from 1998, so not one of the most highly sought after ones, but I should still be able to make a nice profit from my 99 cent investment. Here are the current listings for that version. Sadly, mine's not listed yet. Busy busy.

What did I find this week to resell?.....nothing!  What did I find for myself?...well now, that's a whole 'nother story! :)

Our neighbors come over occasionally for coffee or drinks (okay a little more than occasinally) and hubby and I decided we need some little cordial glasses.  We had been looking and looking and would find 1 or 2, but we being the proper people that we are, wanted a matching set of four!

You see this is the one thing I have discovered about thrift shopping.  If you shop enough, you will eventually find what you are looking for.  At least, that's what I tell myself.

So here are my new matching set of cordial glasses....what do you think?

While I'm pretty excited about this little find, I'm even more excited about what I found that I didn't even know I was looking for!

How do you like my new North Face spring jacket....pretty sweet, huh? :)



My total investment this week for my two finds......$9.  I look at that as money saved, not money spent!

Hot Toys of the Summer 2011 (Part 2 of 2)

Last week I shared Part 1 of my "Look-out For" list.  These are toys that I'm hoping to come across at yard sales and thrift shops this summer.  If you know of a hot toy to look out for, please feel free to share by leaving a comment below.

1.  Fisher Price Flutterbye Dreams Bird Crib Soother

I'll start with something that I recently picked up at a thrift shop for $2.  This is discontinued and hard to find.  I listed on Amazon and sold within a week or so for $39.99 (used).  Terapeak is showing only (1) sold in the last 3 months for $19.07.  As a rule of thumb, I look at ALL crib toys as I've always had luck selling unique or like new crib toys! 

2.  Fisher Price Rainforest Melodies & Lights Deluxe Gym

This is discontinued and hard to find (except at all those yard sales!)  Terapeak is showing these at an average of $42.80 retail price with a 60% sell through rate.  There are other play mats that can be just as popular, take a look at all play gyms.

3.  Fisher Price Wonderpets Talking Flyboat

This is discontinued and hard to find.  The Flyboat should include the (3) figures as shown.  But, if you only come across the figures, I would snatch those up.  Terapeak is showing an average sale price of $28.72 with a whopping 79% sell though rate.  These are also listed on Amazon starting at $59 and up.

4.  Wiggles Singing 15" Dolls 

This is a rare set, but even the individual dolls can be a hot commodity.  Terapeak is showing these with an average sale price of $52.21 with a 69% sell through rate.  Check out some of these listed individually on Amazon here! 

5.  Fisher Price Peek a Block Incrediblock 

This toy is still available but very popular on eBay.  The Incrediblock comes with (8) original blocks.  Terapeak is showing these with an average sale price of $27.63 with a 48% sell through rate.  I sold the Incrediblock a few months back with some extra blocks for $49.99 on eBay.  Even lots of Peek-a-Blocks can be popular. 

6.  Leap Frog Pretend & Learn Shopping Cart

This is discontinued and hard to find.  Terapeak shows these with an average sale price of $25.97 with a 47% sell through rate.  The shopping cart comes with (10) food pieces all numbered.  Even these pieces are valuable on eBay.  There are currently (6) listed on Amazon starting at $54 and up.

7.  Playskool Kick Start Activity Gym

These are becoming increasingly rare, but you can still find them!  Terapeak is showing an average price of $38 with an over 90% sell through rate.  Enough said! :)

8.  Playskool Kick Start Air-Tivity Gym 

This is a "sister" toy to the above gym mentioned and is discontinued and hard to find.  Terapeak is showing these with an average sale price of $27 with a sell through rate of  100%.

9.  Fisher Price Kick & Whirl Gym

This is discontinued and hard to find.  It should come with 5 balls and hanging toys as shown.  Terapeak is showing (1) sold out of (3) for $45.99.  There are currently only (2) listed on eBay with the seller having sold (2) for $38.99 using multi-variation listing.

10.  Baby Einstein DVD Collection

If you can get your hands on this set it would be sweet.  Terapeak is showing an average price of $46.15 with a 85% sell through rate.

I’m so excited to tell you about my FIND! We have been limping along with an old vacuum cleaner at our place of business for years now. The thing would barely pick anything up without going over the same spot several times, it’s pathetic really. I realized last Sunday when I went to close up and vacuum that I really couldn’t hold out any longer, I was going to have to break down and buy a new vacuum cleaner.

Fortunately, hubby and I stopped at our local Goodwill on the way to our weekly grocery shopping trip. As I was perusing the isles...there it was...the vacuum cleaner. It was a Hoover Wind Tunnel upright that was in like new condition. No scratches, clean and the bristles underneath were barely used. The bag inside appeared to be new and the price tag was in my budget...$10.00!

To top it all off this vacuum cleaner is valued at $190 at Sears. I just saved $180 and am a pretty happy camper!

I'm super-excited about my big find this week too! I had a gal I graduated with approach me a few weeks ago and ask if I wanted to buy all her daughter's outgrown clothes. After looking over them a bit, I decided heck yeah! I brought home sixteen 13-gallon kitchen trash bags stuffed FULL of clothes.

My top priority was to sort out the Gymboree items. There were 250 pieces!! Most are like new, several still have the tags!

There were a LOT of other, less-exciting brands, but that's ok. They'll sell in larger lots, and I will have NO problem recouping my investment.

I didn't get out shopping this week, except one trip. It wasn't a great trip, but I did find this electric potato peeler. Who knows how it will do. There are no other ones like it currently listed, but a used one recently sold at auction for about $26.

I spent the day thrift shopping with my hubby yesterday and found some great stuff. We found a fabulous Fire King mug. It's a barrel style mug probably from the 40's or 50's with a Beechcraft Company logo. It has the Beechcraft model 17 Staggerwing graphics on the mug. A quick search did not show any others listed on eBay or anywhere else on the net! What is it worth? To the right buyer...that could be anything!
